How To Choose Cat Litter

Choosing the right cat litter can be complicated. There's a whole world of choice for your cat to do it's business in, so we've broken down the options to help you make a wiser choice...

Clumping Litter

This litter absorbs the waste and turns it into little cement clumps that can be easily scooped out. It's convenient and clean however, the fine dust can track through the house. When required, you will still have to do a thorough clean of the whole tray, but not as often as you would with non-clumping litter.

Non-Clumping Litter

The cheaper option, but needs to be replaced more often. While you can scoop out the faeces, urine is soaked up into the litter so the entire litter must be changed, usually once a week.

Crystals

Crystals absorb well and have no odour and no dust. They also last longer and some are even scented. But like the pack says – do not eat - and sometimes cats will if it’s stuck in their paws.

Recycled Paper Pellets

These absorb well and the clean-up is relatively easy. They may be a slightly smellier option, but they're better for the environment because they're easily composted. Unfortunately not all cats like the larger texture pellets.

With so many options, we suggest testing a few different trays to see which your cat prefers.

A few things to remember...

  • Cats are quite fussy about the toilet. If you're transitioning to a different litter, do It gradually.
  • Enclosed trays are better for privacy and odour.
  • Regular cleaning means regular use.
  • Multiple cats will need multiple trays.
  • Place your tray in a quiet area, away from foot traffic.
  • Cats have a stronger sense of smell, so unscented may be the better option
