Description

The German Wirehaired Pointer is a medium-sized dog with a weather-resistant, water-repellent, wiry outer coat that's dense in winter and thinner in summer. It has longer hair on the beard, forehead and whiskers, and comes in liver and white. Traditionally the German Wirehaired Pointer was used as a gundog because of its pointing, tracking and retrieving strengths.

Characteristics

Very active, intelligent and loyal, the German Wirehaired Pointer likes to be kept busy. It's friendly with people and animals it knows but can be distant with strangers. This breed has a good nose and likes to track, retrieve and hunt.

Health Problems

Some lines are prone to hip dysplasia, ear infections, genetic eye disease and skin cancer.

Exercise

This dog never gets tired so it is important it receives daily vigorous exercise. It will do best with an active family that will take in on regular walks.

Grooming

Brush the coat twice a week and thin it in spring and autumn to keep this breed properly groomed. The hair should be hard but not untidy. This breed is an average shedder.

Living Environment

This breed needs a lot of activity to reduce restlessness so apartment life is not recommended.
