Description

A compact medium-sized dog, the English Cocker Spaniel has low-set long ears covered in silky or wavy hair, coats that come in solid black, liver, red or parti, feathering on the ears, chest, abdomen and legs, and cat-like feet. Traditionally a hunter-gun dog, the Cocker Spaniel is one of the oldest spaniel breeds in the world.

Characteristics

The Cocker Spaniel is energetic, smart, outgoing, gentle, playful, affectionate, obedient, excellent with children, likes strangers, and an overall great companion. It can do well with family cats.

Health Problems

The English Cocker Spaniel gains weight easily so do not overfeed it. It can contract ear infections easier compared to other breeds due to their lower hanging ears, so check them frequently for ticks, burrs/grass seeds and excess wax.

Exercise

The English Cocker Spaniel is an energetic and active breed that requires regular exercise to stay happy and healthy. There is no such thing as too much exercise for an English Cocker Spaniel; it needs to be taken on at least a daily walk.

Grooming

They have medium-length, silky fur that sheds moderately, but regular brushing can help keep loose fur under control. They need to be brushed a few times a week to prevent matting and tangles, and professional grooming every few months is recommended to maintain their coat's health and appearance.

Living Environment

The English Cocker Spaniel is a people-loving breed that does well in a range of living situations, from apartments to rural areas. They love being around their humans and need regular exercise and playtime, whether it's in a secure yard or on daily walks. This breed prefers to be indoors with their family and may get anxious or bored if left alone for too long.
