Description

A powerful muscular dog, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever has webbed toes to help with swimming, an oil short coat that repels water like a duck's feathers do, and comes in brown, red, sedge or tan.

Temperament

This breed is smart, brave, obedient, willing, affectionate and good with children. It may be slow to learn. It loves water, swimming and retrieving. This breed is not recommended for a new dog owner.

Health problems

This dog is prone to eye problems and hip dysplasia.

Exercise

This breed needs regular activity, including a lot of swimming if possible.

Grooming

This dog needs occasional bathing to prevent smelling but should not be bathed so often that the naturals oils are stripped from its coat. This breed is an average shedder.

Living conditions

A Chesapeake Bay Retriever will do best with at least an average-sized backyard, and likes to sleep outdoors if it is cooler there. It is not recommended that it live in an apartment.

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever loves swimming and can do well in very cold waters thanks to its oily coat that repels water and dries very quickly.
